St Aidan's Community School

Careers

Our Guidance Department is run by Mr Tunney and Ms McDonnell. We offer a full range of interventions and activities, which assist pupils to make choices about their lives. For second level pupils these choices are focused in a developmental way on three key areas:

  • Personal
  • Educational
  • Career

The Guidance department has a number of links with outside partners:

JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT IRELAND

  • Second year students participate in ‘The Economics of Staying in School’ in conjunction with CPL Recruitment. For the past five years Keith O’Connor, past pupil and head of I.T in CPL Recruitment has been delivering the programme with great success.
  • Fifth year students participate in ‘Career Success’ in conjunction with PM Group Architects and Engineers. Jenessa Scott, past pupil has been delivering this year’s programme to St Elizabeth’s fifth year group.

BUSINESS IN THE COMMUNITY

  • Since 2012 St Aidan’s have been in partnership with Transdev – LUAS operators. Students have visited the site HQ in Red Cow and participated in Customer Care training, Site tours, CV and Interview preparation and Mock Interviews.

ACCESS PROGRAMMES

  • For the past number of years St Aidan’s have been a part of the ACE (Accessing College Education) programme in conjunction with TU Tallaght and South Dublin County Council. Every year one student from St Aidan’s received €5000 scholarship on achieving the highest points out of the students entering TU Tallaght. Last year Jessica Carey received the award!
  • Each year 18 fifth year students participate in the New Era ‘Future You Mentoring’ programme in conjunction with UCD. The programme involves mentors from UCD, including past pupils currently in UCD, visiting St Aidan’s to deliver a number of workshops aimed at preparing students for third level college. Students have the opportunity to visit UCD, participate in a ‘Shadow a Student for a Day’, and two students are selected for a week long summer school programme in UCD campus.

INSPIRING THE FUTURE

  • Fifth year students attend a careers seminar and visited GOOGLE HQ on International Women’s Day for inspiring talks.

PATH COMMUNITY MENTORING PROGRAMME

  • Third year students participate in two workshops where Students from a number of partner colleges come together who can help to share information and advice about their college experience, as a way to help prospective students build their awareness of college courses, how to apply, and the benefits of a college education.
